Gorkha Tea Estate is a multi-cooperative tea company shaped by high-altitude land, organic principles and the shared work of farmers in eastern Nepal.
From Ilam to the world
Beautiful water, high hills and a shared purpose.
Our home is Sunderpani—also written Sundarpani—in eastern Nepal, adjoining Darjeeling. The name joins “Sundar,” meaning beautiful, with “Pani,” meaning water. At roughly 1,700 metres above sea level, tea grows on previously uncultivated land in conditions that help create a delicate, bright cup.
1998
Tea took root in Sundarpani.
Gorkha Tea Estate began planting tea in 1998. The young bushes, high elevation and fertile land established the foundation for distinctive organic orthodox tea from Ilam.
From the beginning, our purpose has been to produce high-quality Nepali tea while creating shared value for growers, cooperatives and the wider community.
2007–2009
A cooperative organic model came to life.
In 2007, Gorkha Tea Estate began organic farming with interested farmers from Sunderpani. ECO Tea Growers (Kolbong), Shree Baudha Dham and the tea growers’ cooperative joined together to build a larger farmer group.
The estate came into operation in 2009 as a multi-cooperative company, connecting organic cultivation, local knowledge and responsible tea making.
Our commitment
Organic by principle.
We work to protect soil fertility, maintain biodiversity, minimise external inputs and avoid synthetic agrochemicals. Good manufacturing practices help us preserve quality while responsible waste management supports a healthier environment.
Our approach also values knowledge sharing, gender equality and strong relationships across the communities connected to the estate.
Today
Young gardens, skilled hands and quality Nepali tea.
Today, Gorkha Tea Estate brings cooperative growers and responsible production together around high-quality organic orthodox tea.
Every lot carries the influence of its season, altitude and the people who guide it from fresh leaf to finished tea. This is the story we continue to share from Sundarpani to tea drinkers around the world.
